On your mark, get set, MATHCOUNTS!
The 2017 MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is a national math enrichment, coaching and competition program that provides middle school students the opportunity to compete in live, in-person contests against and alongside their peers. On Saturday, February 11, 2017 a dozen middle schools from across the Las Vegas valley sent their best and brightest Mathletes to the Southern Nevada MATHCOUNTS Local Chapter competition where a couple of Las Vegas YMF members assisted with room set up, competition proctoring, and grading.
The competition series has 4 levels of competition – school, chapter, state and national. Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds – sprint, target, team, and countdown round. Altogether the rounds are designed to take 3 hours to complete. After talking to the coaches, who also wear the hat of being the Mathletes’ educators, it was unanimous that the true stars of the day were the students. They all work very hard this year and practiced like champions. For some schools where MATHCOUNTS is not offered as an elective due to budget cuts, the training starts the first week of the school year after school for 2 hours, includes Saturday classes for 3 hours and even math camps during winter break. There was no rest for these Mathletes during the long breaks.
In our increasingly technological society, those students who do not begin developing strong problem-solving, logical thinking and analytical abilities in middle school will face an uphill battle later in life if they wish to pursue a medical, scientific, mathematical, engineering or technical career. As a national math enrichment, coaching, and competition program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students, MATHCOUNTS prepares students for future career opportunities and success.
