![]() Author: Christina Sanon The resume building workshop was a successful undertaking organized by the student chapter of ASCE at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in preparation for the local Career Fair. The membership and student liaison chairs, Christina Sanon and Humberto Rivas, of YMF helped in coordinating the event during the second general body meeting at the university. Suzanne Trabia, at the time president-elect, gave a presentation on the do’s and don’ts of resume writing. After the presentation, the students were paired with a YMF professional to help them tailor their resume for an engineering job opportunity. As discussed during the event, the main purpose of a resume is to get a prospective applicant an interview. Often times, students and professionals seeking employment, write a general resume; however, it is best to have a resume per job application. For instance, a job posting will want an applicant to be proficient in AutoCAD and another job posting will want an applicant who is proficient in AECOSIM. For each of those jobs, the resume should highlight the CAD platform that the job requires. The students learned a lot by asking questions from people who are in hiring positions. Many were spotted at the career fair!
