As the Coronavirus pandemic spread across the world this spring, it changed the way people live, work and behave. It also brought change to the ASCE-YMF. All of sudden, the social interactions at the heart of the organization were off limits. As much of the world moved to virtual interactions, so too did the YMF branch. The Virtual Mentoring Assistant program was developed to substitute the previous mentoring program provided by the YMF, while simultaneously respecting the social distancing requirements brought on by the pandemic. Just like the previous in-person mentoring program, the Virtual Mentoring Assistant allows young professionals to share some of their knowledge and experience with interested Civil Engineering students. All that is needed is to apply. Young professionals are then paired with interested students and the program allows for two virtual meetings between mentors and mentees. As always there is nothing like free food to bring people together, so the meetings take place and the lunch is on us! In addition to that, students participating in the program also receive a free book with advice for their engineering careers. ASCE-YMF is happy to provide this adapted program that is so fun and beneficial to students and mentors alike.
