Green Up 2018

Over 20 volunteers attended the Fall 2018 Green-Up at the Las Vegas Wash this past Saturday, October 13, 2018.  Organized by the Las Vegas Wash Coordination Committee (LVWCC), a partnership created to manage and protect the Las Vegas Wash, the Green-Up event offered ASCE YMF the opportunity to promote active participation in community service to its volunteers.  The LVWCC consists of local, state, and federal agencies, environmental groups, and the business community.

At the Green-Up Event, volunteers dug holes, transplanted grass-like perennial herb plants from pots, and staked temporary drip irrigation lines over multiple acres of land in the wash area.  Revegetating the surrounding area creates habitats for wildlife, reduces bank erosion, and improves the quality of the water entering Lake Mead – Las Vegas Valley’s drinking water source.  The event concluded at noon with a hosted BBQ and ice cream!

With Green-Up bringing together multitudes of volunteer groups ranging from Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops to church groups and local citizens, the event is a nucleus for supporting environmentally conscious efforts and community togetherness, all of which ASCE YMF is proud to be a part of.  Special thanks to the ASCE YMF members, ASCE Student Chapter members, and employees of local civil firms for sacrificing a part of their Saturday to participate in the Green-Up event!  Your help is much appreciated and we hope to see you again at the next Green-Up!
